Kitchen Wallpaper: Appetite For Style
The kitchen often serves as the main gathering spot in the home. Meanwhile, the dining room can get overlooked in favour of the ease and convenience of preparing meals right from the pantry. It’s also where school lunches are packed and homework gets done around the table – making it a hub of activity. Wallpaper, however, isn’t always thought of as practical in the kitchen, where heat, grease, and water splashes can be an issue. But with careful placement, the right wallpaper can add loads of character to an otherwise ordinary kitchen space.
WALLPAPER SAFETY
A favourite spot for wallpaper is as a splashback behind the cooktop or sink. Although placing wallpaper near an open flame may seem risky, most non-woven wallpapers have been tested for fire safety. If you’d like added peace of mind, consider using wallpaper behind an electric stove and not a gas one. Generally, unless your cooktop has an unusual flame pattern, wallpaper should perform well. The same applies with water – most wallpapers can handle small splashes as long as they’re wiped down with a soft cloth. If water is allowed to soak in frequently, though, it can weaken the glue and cause peeling over time. In many cases, wallpaper actually makes for an easy-to-clean surface. Here are a few examples where it has been used successfully.
